Bentheim Castle — Histoire et analyse
Le château de Bentheim existe toujours. Il est situé dans la région frontalière germano-néerlandaise, mais les hautes montagnes de Ruisdael décrites dans cette peinture ne s'y trouvent pas. La fantaisie et la réalité s'entrelacent dans cette scène.
Le peintre a réalisé une douzaine de tableaux de ce château, chacun avec un paysage montagneux différent. En 1861, Goethe, le célèbre écrivain allemand, a justement qualifié Ruisdael de poète.
