Così tanto è andato storto con questo ritratto della milizia di Amsterdam. Hals fece diversi viaggi nella capitale per ritrarre i guardiani, ma alcuni non si presentarono mai. Alla fine, insistette affinché venissero ad Haarlem, ma rifiutarono, ingaggiando invece il pittore di Amsterdam Pieter Codde per completare l'opera.
I progressi di Hals rimangono quindi poco chiari, ma la composizione e le sette figure a sinistra sembrano essere in gran parte opera sua.
