Rembrandt era affascinato dagli effetti della luce. Questo è evidente anche nelle sue incisioni, ad esempio in questi ritratti in miniatura in cui il suo volto è per lo più parzialmente in ombra. Nella versione con il cappello di pelliccia, possiamo vedere che questo copricapo è stato aggiunto solo in un secondo momento.
Ha iniziato l'incisione con la testa nuda: i suoi capelli sono ancora visibili attraverso il cappello.
