Escrita por Jan Six, a tragédia Medeia estreou em 1647. Rembrandt desenhou a capa para a peça impressa. A cena que ele retratou, aliás, não aparece nela: ele apenas resumiu a trama.
Em primeiro plano à direita está Medeia, abandonada por seu marido, Jasão, que se casa com a princesa Creusa no palco acima. Medeia executou uma vingança horrenda contra eles.
