Saenredam baseou esta pintura em um desenho que havia feito dezesseis anos antes. No degrau do pórtico, ele anotou que a deteriorada câmara municipal havia sido destruída por um incêndio e substituída por uma nova e monumental (agora o Palácio na Praça Dam). Desde 1658, esta pintura esteve pendurada na câmara majestosa dos prefeitos no novo Município como uma lembrança do antigo edifício.
