Saenredam basó esta pintura en un dibujo que había realizado dieciséis años antes. En el escalón del pórtico, anotó que el deteriorado ayuntamiento había sido destruido por un incendio y reemplazado por uno nuevo y monumental (ahora el Palacio en la Plaza Dam). Desde 1658, esta pintura colgó en la majestuosa sala de los alcaldes en el nuevo Ayuntamiento como un recuerdo del antiguo edificio.
