Ab 1609 segelte die Ostindien-Kompanie nach Lawec, nahe Phnom Penh. Dort kaufte die Kompanie Vorräte wie Reis, Butter, Schweinefleisch und Schmalz für Batavia. Banda lieferte Muskatnuss und Muskatblüte.
Im Jahr 1621 bestrafte Gouverneur-General Coen die Insel für den Handel mit anderen Ländern: Alle fünfzehntausend Inselbewohner wurden getötet oder vertrieben. Der 'Schlächter von Banda' gründete Muskatnussplantagen, die stark von Festungen bewacht wurden.
