Dal 1609 la Compagnia delle Indie Orientali navigava verso Lawec, vicino a Phnom Penh. Lì la compagnia acquistava provviste, come riso, burro, maiale e strutto, per Batavia. Banda forniva macis e noce moscata.
Nel 1621, il Governatore Generale Coen punì l'isola per aver commerciato con altri paesi: tutti i quindicimila isolani furono uccisi o scacciati. Il 'macellaio di Banda' fondò piantagioni di noce moscata, pesantemente sorvegliate da forti.
