Liotard realizó este esmalte durante una visita a Lyon, basándose en uno de los varios retratos del soberano que había hecho anteriormente en Viena. Estaba particularmente orgulloso de la 'brillantez' de la superficie dura y similar a una gema y de los colores. Es una de las pinturas en esmalte más grandes jamás realizadas, y la técnica le presentó algunas dificultades a Liotard: una inscripción en la parte posterior indica que este fue el 'segundo intento'.
