Liotard fez este esmalte durante uma visita a Lyon, baseando-se em um dos vários retratos do soberano que havia feito anteriormente em Viena. Ele estava particularmente orgulhoso do 'brilho' da superfície dura semelhante a uma gema e da coloração. É uma das maiores pinturas em esmalte já feitas, e a técnica trouxe algumas dificuldades para Liotard: uma inscrição na parte de trás registra que esta foi a 'segunda tentativa.'
