En 1821, Kruseman viajó a Italia. Según la inscripción de esta imagen, la pintó en Roma. Combina tanto las tradiciones pictóricas holandesas como las italianas.
Las dos figuras mayores aún reflejan el estilo realista holandés, mientras que los jóvenes son tipos de campesinos italianos idealizados. El pequeño altar mariano en el árbol es una copia exacta de una obra del pintor renacentista Rafael, el gran modelo de Kruseman.
