Em 1821, Kruseman viajou para a Itália. De acordo com a inscrição desta imagem, ele a pintou em Roma. Combina tanto as tradições pictóricas holandesas quanto as italianas.
As duas figuras mais velhas ainda refletem o estilo realista holandês, enquanto os jovens são tipos idealizados de camponeses italianos. O pequeno altar mariano na árvore é uma cópia exata de uma obra do pintor renascentista Rafael, grande modelo de Kruseman.
