Jan Nieuwenhuyzen fue un librero, impresor y predicador menonita. Junto con algunos espíritus afines, fundó en 1784 la Maatschappij tot Nut van ’t Algemeen (Sociedad para el Avance Público). La sociedad se esforzó por elevar el nivel espiritual y moral de la sociedad, principalmente contribuyendo a la mejora de la educación general.
