Jan Nieuwenhuyzen era un libraio, stampatore e predicatore mennonita. Insieme a pochi spiriti affini, nel 1784 fondò la Maatschappij tot Nut van ’t Algemeen (Società per il Progresso Pubblico). La società si sforzava di elevare il livello spirituale e morale della società, principalmente contribuendo al miglioramento dell'istruzione generale.
