Jan Nieuwenhuyzen foi um livreiro, impressor e pregador menonita. Juntamente com alguns espíritos afins, em 1784 fundou a Maatschappij tot Nut van ’t Algemeen (Sociedade para o Avanço Público). A sociedade esforçou-se para elevar o nível espiritual e moral da sociedade, principalmente contribuindo para a melhoria da educação geral.
