Como exactor y pintor de escenas, Troost entendía la ilusión. En este autorretrato, se mira a sí mismo y a nosotros a través de un espejo. La cortina, el pedestal, la paleta y el dibujo en papel azul crean una sensación de profundidad.
Cada detalle atestigua su habilidad técnica. Observe cómo transmitió la fina tela de batista de su elegante jabot – el volante de volantes que se adhiere a su camisa – con una sola pincelada de pintura blanca.
