Como ex-ator e cenógrafo, Troost compreendia a ilusão. Neste autorretrato, ele nos observa a partir de um espelho, tanto a nós quanto a si mesmo. A cortina, o pedestal, a paleta e o desenho em papel azul criam uma sensação de profundidade.
Cada detalhe testemunha sua habilidade técnica. Note como ele transmitiu o fino tecido de batista de seu elegante jabot – o babado preso à sua camisa – com um único traço de tinta branca.
