Rembrandt disfrutaba visiblemente al dibujar escenas domésticas de mujeres y niños. Los coleccionistas también estaban claramente encantados por ellas. Cuando el pintor y coleccionista Jan van de Cappelle murió en 1679, dejó atrás un álbum que contenía 135 dibujos 'que representan la vida de mujeres con niños por Rembrandt'.
