Rembrandt demonstrava prazer visível ao desenhar cenas domésticas de mulheres e crianças. Os colecionadores também estavam claramente encantados com elas. Quando o pintor e colecionador Jan van de Cappelle faleceu em 1679, deixou um álbum contendo 135 desenhos 'da vida de mulheres com crianças por Rembrandt.'
