Le marchand d'Amsterdam Abraham Anthonisz Recht était un remontrant convaincu et un grand admirateur de Wtenbogaert. Il a commandé ce portrait à Rembrandt en 1633 et l'a accroché chez lui. Wtenbogaert vous regarde avec un regard pénétrant, il est clairement un homme d'autorité morale.
Et, un homme de la Parole, comme le suggère le livre ouvert. Mais quel livre exactement, reste inconnu.
