Nel 1614, politica e religione sono inestricabilmente legate tra loro, come è molto chiaro in questo dipinto. A sinistra ci sono ministri protestanti e leader della Repubblica (incluso Maurizio), e a destra gli arciduchi che governano il Sud, con innumerevoli chierici cattolici. Il Nord, secondo il pittore, ha un futuro promettente: il sole splende lì, gli alberi sono pieni di foglie.
Chiunque voglia essere salvato è meglio che nuoti verso una barca protestante.
