Questo ritratto ci invita a entrare nella stanza e godere dell'arte e della musica con questo gentiluomo. Tipica del XVIII secolo è l'assenza di distanza tra il soggetto e lo spettatore: la somiglianza non è intimidatoria. Ci troviamo faccia a faccia con un giovane allegro, membro di una ricca famiglia mennonita di Amsterdam.
