Vincent van Gogh resolveu tornar-se artista em 1880 e inicialmente praticou o desenho. Em resposta a um pedido de seu tio, o marchand C.M. van Gogh, ele desenhou uma série de paisagens urbanas de Haia.
O artista não escolheu os habituais locais pitorescos, mas sim as periferias da cidade, como aqui em Schenkweg, onde ele mesmo morava.
