Vincent van Gogh decidió convertirse en artista en 1880 y al principio practicó el dibujo. En respuesta a un encargo de su tío, el comerciante de arte C.M. van Gogh, dibujó una serie de paisajes urbanos de La Haya.
El artista no eligió los lugares pintorescos habituales, sino más bien las afueras de la ciudad, como aquí en Schenkweg, donde él mismo vivía.
