Aqueles que foram ao mar jogaram roleta com suas vidas. Os navios de madeira eram pequenos e frágeis, e os perigos muito reais eram exagerados com histórias de horror sobre criaturas hediondas que habitavam as profundezas insondáveis. Willaerts criou uma imagem do pior pesadelo de cada marinheiro.
Um navio foi despedaçado nas rochas, e os outros dois estão inclinando. Os sobreviventes ao centro são ameaçados por um peixe monstruoso.
