Piranesi é mais conhecido por suas grandes gravuras de Roma e seus arredores, que eram destinadas à venda para turistas. Este desenho apresenta um templo grego no sul da Itália. A composição foi cuidadosamente pensada com uma sucessão rítmica de colunas que atravessam diagonalmente o plano da imagem.
A ênfase foi colocada nos efeitos de luz e sombra e na irregularidade do desmoronamento do mármore. Pastores com gado criam uma atmosfera pastoral.
