A radiant figure stands at the center, surrounded by a crowd pressed close on all sides. The central figure, with long hair and a gentle expression, raises one hand in blessing while the other is lowered in a gesture of comfort or instruction. A luminous halo of etched lines radiates outward from his head, casting him in bright light against a deep, shadowed background.

To the left, a group of listeners leans in, their faces marked by curiosity and concern; one elderly man reaches out, his hand almost touching the central figure’s robe. At the lower left, a woman sits on the ground with a child in her lap, her head bowed in exhaustion or prayer, while another figure reclines nearby, gazing upward. On the right, a kneeling woman clasps her hands in supplication, her face turned upward, and behind her, others crowd in, some with hands raised or clasped, all intent on the speaker.

The figures wear varied garments, with turbans, hats, and cloaks rendered in fine, swirling lines and dense hatching, giving texture to fabric and hair. The ground is scattered with subtle details: a dog lies at the bottom left, and the earth is marked with etched grasses and stones. The arched top of the print frames the scene, enclosing the crowd and focusing attention on the central figure, while the background is almost entirely dark, heightening the drama of the light.

Rembrandt’s technique is evident in the varied line work: soft, smoky shading in the background contrasts with crisp, bright highlights on faces and hands, and the intricate cross-hatching creates depth and atmosphere.
