Democritus — Historia y Análisis
Los filósofos griegos Demócrito y Heráclito fueron considerados opuestos polares. En contraste con el viejo y melancólico Heráclito (el colgante cercano), Demócrito aparece como un joven hedonista riendo. Señala a la distancia, como si allí se encontrara la locura de la humanidad.
Juntas, las dos pinturas transmiten un mensaje moralizante: ya sea que rías o llores, el mundo sigue siendo incurablemente tonto.
