D'après l'inscription sur le cadre original, nous savons qu'il s'agit d'un portrait du noble Joris van Egmond. Il a gagné la faveur de l'empereur Charles V et est devenu évêque d'Utrecht en 1535. Van Egmond était un important mécène pour les artistes, y compris Van Scorel, qui a peint son protecteur sur un panneau d'un format exceptionnellement large.
