Les vêtements de la jeune femme ne correspondent pas aux modes de l'époque de Rembrandt, mais reflètent plutôt des styles de siècles antérieurs. Les traits distinctifs de la femme – un front bombé, des yeux légèrement saillants et un menton prononcé – sont facilement reconnaissables dans les représentations des déesses et héroïnes antiques que Rembrandt a peintes dans les années 1630. Ainsi, le tableau n'est pas strictement un portrait, mais un 'tronie', ou tête fantaisie.
