I vestiti della giovane donna non sono in linea con le mode del tempo di Rembrandt, ma riflettono piuttosto stili di secoli precedenti. Le caratteristiche distintive della donna – una fronte a cupola, occhi leggermente sporgenti e un mento pronunciato – sono facilmente riconoscibili nelle raffigurazioni di dee e eroine antiche che Rembrandt dipinse negli anni '30 del Seicento. Pertanto, il dipinto non è strettamente un ritratto, ma un 'tronie', o testa fantastica.
