Maximiliaan I, 1517 - 1521, by Albrecht Dürer, paper, public domain

Maximiliaan I — History & Analysis

Emperor Maximilian i was the first ruler to make deliberate use of prints to enhance his own fame.

The most famous example is this woodcut, modelled on a portrait of the German emperor that Albrecht Dürer drew in Augsburg.

Engravings, and especially woodcuts, can be printed in staggering numbers, whereby they cost a fraction of the price of a painting.
