Portrait of Marten Soolmans — Histoire et analyse
Marten et Oopjen sont le seul couple que Rembrandt a peint à taille réelle, debout et en pleine longueur. Le père de Marten est venu à Amsterdam d'Anvers en tant que réfugié protestant. Il a fait fortune en tant que propriétaire d'une raffinerie de sucre.
Marten a épousé Oopjen en 1633. Il avait 20 ans et était étudiant en droit, prêt pour une carrière en politique. Malheureusement, il est mort seulement huit ans plus tard.
