Portrait of Marten Soolmans — History & Facts
A young man stands full-length against a plain, dark background, his body turned slightly to the right while his head faces forward, meeting the viewer's gaze directly. He wears an elaborate black costume with a shimmering, ribbed texture, trimmed with large, white lace collars and cuffs that catch the light and stand out against the dark fabric. The figure's face is softly illuminated, revealing fair skin, rosy cheeks, and a composed, almost reserved expression framed by short, curled hair beneath a broad-brimmed black hat.
A row of decorative silver bows runs across his chest and waist, their delicate highlights painted with precise, crisp brushwork. He stands on a tiled floor of cream and grey squares, the perspective of the tiles receding into the shadowed background and anchoring the figure firmly in space. His shoes are adorned with large, round rosettes of lace, echoing the intricate patterns at his collar and cuffs, and white silk stockings complete the ensemble.
The black cloak draped over his shoulders forms a sweeping arc, its surface rendered with fine, parallel strokes that suggest the sheen and weight of the fabric. Light falls from the left, casting subtle shadows on the wall and floor, and emphasizing the volume of the sitter's form and the textures of his clothing. Portrait of Marten Soolmans was painted in 1634 by Rembrandt, during the height of the Dutch Golden Age painting movement. The work was created in Amsterdam, a center of artistic innovation at the time.
According to the Rijksmuseum, this portrait is now jointly owned by the Dutch State and the French Republic, and belongs to both the Rijksmuseum and the Department of Paintings of the Louvre.
