Il protagonista di questa scena, Giovanni Battista, il precursore di Cristo, si trova parzialmente nascosto all'ombra di un gruppo di alberi fantasiosi. È come se Bloemaert volesse dimostrare di poter dipingere praticamente qualsiasi cosa: un paesaggio montuoso, alberi frondosi, così come figure, sia nude che vestite con abiti esotici e colorati, disposte in pose complicate. Tutto ciò dimostra che è un maestro del Manierismo.
