El pintor Geertgen tot Sint-Jans vivió en Haarlem en el monasterio de los Sint-Jansheren (la Comandancia de los Caballeros de San Juan), de donde tomó su nombre. Los tres magos representan las tres generaciones y provienen de los tres continentes conocidos en la Edad Media: Europa, Asia y África. Rinden homenaje al recién nacido Jesús.
