O pintor Geertgen tot Sint-Jans viveu em Haarlem no mosteiro dos Sint-Jansheren (a Comenda dos Cavaleiros de São João), de onde tirou seu nome. Os três magos representam as três gerações e vêm dos três continentes conhecidos na Idade Média: Europa, Ásia e África. Eles prestam homenagem ao recém-nascido Jesus.
