Marie et William n'étaient que des enfants lorsqu'ils se sont mariés : elle avait neuf ans, lui quatorze. De manière assez inhabituelle, elle se tient à gauche en raison de son statut plus élevé – Marie était la fille d'un roi, William le fils d'un stadhouder et prince. L'alliance de Marie souligne le lien entre les Pays-Bas et l'Angleterre, qui a été cimenté par ce mariage.
Elle porte également une broche en diamant, un autre cadeau de William.
