Même en tant que jeune artiste inexpérimenté, Rembrandt n'a pas hésité à expérimenter. Ici, la lumière effleure sa joue droite, tandis que le reste de son visage est voilé dans l'ombre. Il faut un certain temps pour réaliser que l'artiste nous fixe intensément.
En utilisant le bout de son pinceau, Rembrandt a fait des griffures dans la peinture encore humide pour accentuer les boucles de ses cheveux ébouriffés.
