Il fruttivendolo ha consegnato la sua merce e prima di andare avanti scambia due chiacchiere con la serva. De Lelie ha dipinto questa scena di cucina olandese antica nella tradizione della pittura di genere del XVII secolo. Era interessato a rendere i vari dettagli il più fedelmente possibile: i cesti di verdure, la brocca di terracotta, i recipienti di peltro sul camino e gli utensili di ottone contro le piastrelle bianche.
