No final, Rembrandt ficou com uma placa de cobre desgastada da qual já não se podiam obter boas impressões. A solução que ele concebeu desta vez foi mais radical: ele substituiu a representação na placa de cobre por uma nova versão. Embora Cristo ainda possa ser visto na cruz, várias figuras e cavalos ao seu redor foram alterados, e o clima é muito mais sombrio do que antes.
