Alla fine Rembrandt si trovò con una lastra di rame usurata dalla quale non si potevano più ottenere buone impressioni. La soluzione che ideò questa volta fu più radicale: sostituì la rappresentazione sulla lastra di rame con una nuova versione. Mentre Cristo è ancora visibile sulla croce, molte figure e cavalli intorno a lui sono stati cambiati, e l'atmosfera è molto più cupa rispetto a prima.
