Sheaves of Wheat — History & Facts
Eight tall sheaves of wheat stand upright in a harvested field, each bundle tied tightly and fanned out at the base, their golden stalks dominating the foreground and middle ground. The sheaves are arranged in a loose arc, some overlapping and others spaced apart, creating a rhythmic pattern across the surface. Short, stubbly remnants of cut wheat dot the earth beneath the bundles, painted with quick, upright strokes that echo the vertical energy of the sheaves themselves.
The field is rendered in undulating bands of blue, cream, and ochre, with swirling brushwork that suggests the movement of wind or the shimmer of sunlight on the stubble. Each sheaf is crowned with a burst of blue and ochre marks, giving the impression of loose stalks and casting lively shadows on the ground. In the background, a low band of yellow earth separates the field from a row of green trees, their foliage formed by dense, looping strokes.
Above the trees, a strip of pale blue sky is visible, its color applied in horizontal dashes that contrast with the verticality of the wheat. The entire scene is built from thick, textured brushstrokes, with paint laid on in energetic, directional lines that give the surface a palpable sense of movement and light. No human figures appear, but the careful arrangement of the sheaves and the freshly cut field suggest recent activity and the rhythms of rural life. Sheaves of Wheat was created by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, during his time in Auvers-sur-Oise.
The subject is a field of Triticum, or wheat, with trees marking the horizon and a wide sky above, placing the scene firmly in the tradition of landscape painting. This work belongs to the Post-impressionism movement, as seen in the expressive brushwork and bold use of color.
