Sakaki Hyakusen was a Japanese painter and printmaker, active during the Edo period. He is recognized for his contributions to the ukiyo-e genre and is considered one of the notable figures of the late 17th and early 18th centuries in Japan. Hyakusen was born in 1660 in the city of Kyoto. He trained under the renowned ukiyo-e artist, Katsukawa Shunsho, which greatly influenced his artistic style. His works often depict landscapes, kabuki actors, and beautiful women, showcasing the aesthetics of the time. Hyakusen's significance lies in his ability to blend traditional Japanese themes with innovative techniques, making him a pivotal figure in the evolution of ukiyo-e. He passed away in 1742, leaving behind a legacy that would influence future generations of artists.
