Salomon Koninck was never a student at Rembrandt, but made use of his style and technique and was happy to take up motifs from the master’s production. The one on the cloud hovering the angel with a palm twig in his hand is on a painting by Rembrandt’s teacher Pieter Lastman from 1618 in the Hermitage, St Petersburg. The composition can also be compared to a cartoon embankment attributed to Rembrandt School in Albertina, Vienna.
