Painting — History & Facts
From an exhibition catalog from 1988: Birger Berndtson was born in Trollhättan in 1890. He decided early to try the artistic path. He moved to Gothenburg in 1912 and started at the Sluff Association’s school.
Three years later he started at Valand’s Painting School and went there until 1921 and then for teachers Axel Erdmann, Birger Simonsson, Carl Ryd and Tor Bjurström. Gallery Ny Konst in Gothenburg exhibited his paintings in 1921, the criticism was good and above all by Axel Romdahl. His friends in the street were Ragnar Sandberg, David Larsson, Carl Svanberg m fl.
In 1925 Berndtson moved to Stockholm where he got a job with Filip Mansson AB and one of his workmates became Sven Erixon “X-et.” Berndtson married Nanny Carlsson in 1926 and had his son Bo the following year. At the Swedish Public Arts Association’s exhibition at Liljevalch’s Art Hall in Stockholm in 1930, his painting was brought to his attention and he obtained the Regnerska Resestipendiet. He made a longer trip to Germany and Italy 1931-1932 for the scholarship.
The remaining part of the 30s painted Berndtson diligently and was socialised with Rudolf Pettersson and “Färg and the Forms” in Stockholm. In 1940, Berndtson quickly dies after a few months of illness (brain tumor). Professor Carl Malmsten and "X et organize a memorial exhibition at Gallery Moderne 1944 in Stockholm and again he receives consistently good criticism.
However, for a number of strange reasons, most of his production remained in his home until the autumn of 1987 when his wife Nanny died at the age of 96. Then the son found no less than 120 jobs under her bed, which was significantly more than he could have imagined. Kjell Hjern and Bertil Sundborn m fl already pointed out in the late fifties that Birger Berndtson had gone up in colour and painted in the characteristic Göteborg coloristic way a couple of years before the famous Tor Bjurström students did so. The closest friend Rudolf Pettersson (the man behind the comic book 91: an Karlsson) wrote the following words in the memorial catalog 1944: "Behind Birger Berndtson’s canvases lies a great endeavour and a lot of searching - his self-criticism was almost morbid - really happy with his work, he rarely became. He was honest and humble, as a man editable and friendly The Swedish Art Critic Sven Lindström 1944: “The juicy harmonies have been settled with momentum and flight and the shape is respected without ever being exaggerated to stiffness.
Birger Berndtson’s painting is healthy and sympathetic and testifies to a strong sense of nature” Ansgarius Begesson, Valandselev 1920-25 and good friend of Berndtson: “It is a pity that Birger Berndtson’s painting did not come to light until now. It feels keen that his paintings be noticed and shown at exhibitions. He was a colorist with great connection to Valands Målarskola and Gothenburg in the years between 1912-25.” Kungsbacka, March 1988
