After Jean Baptiste Joseph Pater

French, 1695–1736

Jean Baptiste Joseph Pater was a French painter known for his contributions to the Rococo style. He was born on March 29, 1695, in Valenciennes, France, and died on July 25, 1736, in Paris. Pater was a student of Antoine Watteau, a leading figure of the Rococo movement, and he became known for his genre scenes and fête galante, which depicted elegant outdoor social gatherings. His work often featured playful and romantic themes, characterized by light colors and fluid brushwork. Some of his notable works include 'The Feast of Love' and 'The Dance'. Pater's significance lies in his ability to carry on the traditions of Watteau while also developing his own unique style, influencing later artists in the Rococo period.
