British, 1799–1871
Anna Atkins (1799–1871) was an English botanist and photographer. Using the cyanotype, a sun-printing process invented by her family friend Sir John Herschel in 1842, she made Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, begun in 1843 and often called the first book illustrated with photographs. With her friend Anne Dixon she later made cyanotypes of ferns.
