Indian, 1600
Basawan (active about 1580–1600) was an Indian miniature painter at the Mughal court of the emperor Akbar. His contemporaries valued him as a skilled colourist and a keen observer of people, and his use of portraiture in the illustrations of the Akbarnama, the emperor's official history, is seen as an innovation in Indian painting. His son Manohar also became a court painter.
