English, 1775–1851

Joseph Mallord William Turner was an English Romantic painter, printmaker, and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive use of light and color, and is often regarded as a precursor to Impressionism. Turner was born on April 23, 1775, in Covent Garden, London. He began his artistic training at a young age, enrolling at the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 14. He exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy in 1790 and became a full member in 1802. Throughout his career, Turner produced a vast body of work, including over 20,000 paintings, drawings, and watercolors, with notable works such as 'The Fighting Temeraire' and 'Rain, Steam and Speed.' His style evolved from detailed landscapes to more abstract and atmospheric compositions, emphasizing the effects of light and weather. Turner's innovative approach to color and form significantly influenced future generations of artists, solidifying his place as one of the most important figures in British art history.
